South Korea's democratic system is susceptible to populist impulses. It's still better than was expected.

The country is searching for a new paradigm of development. A Confucian culture that values respect for ancestors and gendered family relationships continues to influence the way we live. There are signs of a secularist cultural trend that is emerging.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of modern Koreans lived by hunting and gathering wild food. In the tens of thousands of years after, they began to grow crops such as millet and beans. They also raised livestock and created furs. These tribes formed tribal states in succession in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established a metallurgy business, making iron tools and bronze. They traded with other states and introduced celadon papermaking, block printing, art styles and writing to Japan.

In 2333 BCE Gojoseon came into existence on the southern part of the peninsula. This state embraced Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian philosophy. During this time, the people of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a hierarchical society with a monarch and top officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy, while the rest of the population was peasants. The state took taxes from these citizens, and sometimes forced them to serve in the army or build fortifications.

At the close of this period the state of Baekje was established by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and was the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. This new kingdom expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war with Goguryeo and China's commanderies in the region. Baekje incorporated aspects of Confucian thinking into its state beliefs and made the male-centric concept of filiopiety an official doctrine in 1390 CE. Goryeo, who ruled from 918 until 1392 CE gave the world the Hangul alphabet that was based on the shapes formed by the mouth when it was pronounced. In 1145 CE the Samguk Sagi, or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was first recorded.

Development in Korea

The Korean peninsula has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Early evidence of human settlements are evident in the form of graves lined with stones, with precious objects like amazonite jewellery being buried along with the dead. Megalithic structures, referred to as dolmens and constructed from single large stones are prevalent throughout the country.


Gojoseon was the first state to be recognized during the first half of 1st millennium BCE. After that, the peninsula was ruled by several states in the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCfrom 635 CE) including Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla. The northern region of the peninsula was occupied for a time by the Balhae Kingdom, which historians do not believe to be a true Korean state.

After the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Of them, Baekje was the most powerful of them all but its dynasty dissolved when Goguryeo was defeated in 676 CE, leaving it with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region around the Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged, and the three kingdoms began to collaborate to expand their territorial holdings. Silla with the aid of the Chinese, eventually conquered and united the peninsula in 935.

As Korea is entering the post-crisis phase its development model appears to be in flux. People who are shocked by the enormous cost of the old systems support a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital, labor and markets for products. On the other hand, supporters of the old system attempt to preserve it through nationalist sentiments, as well as by stoking fears of job losses.

The academic and policy analysts remain in a tense debate about the extent to the extent that these two developments are driving Koreas shift towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article analyzes the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development that include illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877) democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also identifies significant factors that may influence these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their views to this segment. A 2009 survey revealed that almost a third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there was insufficient evidence from science to support the theory 39% claimed that the theory did not align with their beliefs and 17% claimed it was difficult to comprehend.  에볼루션사이트  of disbelief is similar to that of the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

In the past, most of the anti-evolutionist movement in Korea was focused on teaching college students and leading them to Christ. A significant rise in interest in creation science came in 1980, with the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the keynote speakers. The event was attended by a large number of pastors, professors, church leaders and scientists.

The success of this event resulted in the establishment of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The event was extensively covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, which published its activities and also published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR, as well as a few books on creationism that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures in universities and churches across the country.

One example of one KACR success story took place at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, enough students were fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised the money and support to construct a small museum on campus with creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine, CREATION, which covers topics in creation science. It has also sponsored a series of talks by ICR staff. It has also organized local branches that conduct seminars and give talks to school children and community groups.

Changes in South Korea

In the latter part of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life. The hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other style elements from abroad. In the same way, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by modern rock and roll and jazz. During this time the samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, became popular with the public. These dramatic dances were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums and different musical instruments.

The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new development paradigm. The main challenge for the new regime is to strike the right balance between market-oriented and state-led policies. It also involves altering incentives, monitoring, or discipline schemes that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4.

Founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established jointly by people living along the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and immigrants from northern China. Baekje was an important regional power in the early 4th century extended its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. In the process, it entered into frequent conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders across the border.

The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries resulted in the development of powerful local factions. Gungye was a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. He also exerted control over part of the present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Then, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival of Goguryeo.

His rule was however short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935, and then united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla Later, he incorporated Baekje into Goryeo and acted as a peaceful successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the central government system. This marked the closing of the Three Kingdoms period. From that point, the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually grew to become powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
